A man has been arrested following the death of James Handy, police have confirmed. Officers were called to a street in England late on Wednesday evening after reports of a disturbance. Emergency services attended and found a man with serious injuries. He was later identified as 37-year-old James Handy.
Police said that Mr. Handy was taken to the hospital, but he died a short time later. Detectives treat the case as suspicious, and an investigation is underway. A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody while officers carry out inquiries.
Neighbors described hearing shouting and raised voices before the arrival of the police. Some said they saw emergency vehicles outside a terraced house in the early hours. Officers sealed off the scene to collrct evidence and to speak to witnesses in the area.
Detective Inspector Laura Mills, who is leading the journey, said the force is working to establish the full circumstances. She asked anyone with information to come forward. “We have arrested a man, and inquiries are continuing,” she said. “We are taken to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything around the time of the incident.”
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the exact cause of Mr. Handy’s death. The coroner will be notified, and family liaison officers are supporting his relatives. Police confirmed that they have notified next of kin and are keeping the family informed as inquiries progress.
At this stage, officers have not released a motive. Investigators are exploring several lines of inquiry, including possible disputes and whether alcohol or drugs were a factor. Forensic teams were seen at the property collecting items and searching the surrounding area for clues.
Residents have expressed shock at the death. Several described Mr. Handy as quiet and well-liked in the neighborhood. Others said there had been occasional disputes between households, but nothing that suggested a fatal outcome. Community leaders urged anyone with information to speak to the police to help bring clarity.
The arrest follows a period of public concern over incidents in the region. Police said they will maintain patrols in the area while inquiries continue. Officers also urged people not to speculate on social media about the case, warning that false rumors could harm the investigation and affect the family.
The suspect remains in police custody and will be questioned by detectives. If further evidence is found, charges may be brought. The Crown Prosecution Service will decide whether to prosecute based on the evidence gathered.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has CCTV or dashcam footage is asked to contact the local force, quoting incident number 5421 of June 3. Information can also be given anonymously through Crimestoppers.
This story and more details will be published as police release them. The force said it will provide updates when appropriate and thanked the public for their assistance so far.
