London’s Football Clubs: Exploring the Biggest Clubs in the Capital

Boasting 17 football clubs across the city, London has rightfully earned its reputation as the football capital of the world. In this article, we’ll shine a spotlight on seven London football clubs: West Ham United, Arsenal, Brentford, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, and Fulham.

These clubs, each with its own unique history and passionate following, dominate the London Premier League scene and keep the beautiful game alive within the iconic English capital. Whether you’re a devoted supporter or simply intrigued by London’s football landscape, read on as we explore the rich culture, fierce rivalries, how to get football tickets and excellence that define these remarkable clubs.

West Ham United F.C.

Among the illustrious London football teams, West Ham United stands tall. Originally founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks, the club was later rebranded as West Ham United in 1900. With triumphs in the FA Cup in 1964, 1975, and 1980, West Ham has etched its name in football folklore. In 2016, the club embraced a new home at the London Stadium, witnessing a surge in fan support under the leadership of David Moyes.

There are plenty of good reasons to catch a West Ham game, and one is to watch the Dockers derby. Named after the dockworkers who founded West Ham and rival Millwall F.C., the derby is an intense encounter between the two teams. However, nowadays the derby occurs less frequently because the teams compete in separate leagues.

Fulham F.C.

Founded in 1879, Fulham F.C. is the oldest London club to play in the Premier League. Yet despite their long history, the club’s trophy cabinet still stands empty. There have been several near-miss moments, including losing the FA Cup final to West Ham United in 1975 and the Europa League final to Atlético Madrid in 2010.

Luckily, the team has its rivalry with fellow London football club, Brentford, to keep them motivated. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, tensions between the two clubs’ supporters led to clashes on and off the pitch. With both clubs now competing in the Premier League, a showdown between them promises to be an absolute must-watch spectacle.

Tottenham Hotspur F.C.

Tottenham Hotspur stands as a formidable contender among Premier League teams. The team has held a significant position among London football clubs since 1882. However, it has been 15 years since they last lifted a trophy, and with the departure of star striker Harry Kane, this year will define the club’s future.

Get ready to catch some intense matches at their home grounds, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as the team looks to finally collect that long-awaited trophy. Any clash with Arsenal, also known as the North London derby, always promises to be a can’t-miss event. Additionally, the fiery competition between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, which emerged from the turbulent hooliganism of 1980s English football, promises electric encounters and thrilling matches.

Arsenal F.C.

Founded in 1886 by Royal Arsenal workers, Arsenal is a cornerstone of London Premier League teams. Nicknamed the Gunners, the club has clinched a staggering 13 league titles, 14 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 17 Community Shields, and 1 European Cup. However, their last Premier League victory was 15 years ago.

Arsenal’s trophy collection isn’t the only impressive thing about this London football club. The team boast several high-profile rivalries including Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Manchester United and Chelsea. These tensions span across London neighbourhoods and competitions to create some of the best football to watch.

Brentford F.C.

Founded in 1889, Brentford has a rich history intertwined with its legendary Griffin Park stadium, famed for a pub gracing each corner. However, in 2020, they made a momentous move to the Brentford Community Stadium, ushering in their Premier League debut during the 2021-2022 season via a victorious playoff campaign.

This London football club is also known as “The Bees”. An affectionate nickname from their fans that pays homage to their emblem, a golden bee, symbolizing their rich history, dynamic style and relentless pursuit of success. From grassroots leagues to the illustrious Premier League, Brentford’s journey captures the highs and lows of football.

Chelsea F.C.

Established in 1905, Chelsea F.C. proudly stands as the only London football club to win the Champions League. Since the club’s transformative ownership change in 2003, Chelsea has firmly cemented its place in the Premier League’s top teams as well.

The team’s triumphs aren’t the sole reason why thousands of fans flock to Stamford Bridge in West London. Chelsea has also gained fame for its spirited rivalries, particularly with Tottenham Hotspur. These two teams have been engaging in feuds since 1909, and their showdowns fill stadiums with both players and supporters craving victory.

Crystal Palace

Based in Selhurst Park in South London, Crystal Palace was formally founded in 1905. The club took its name from the Crystal Palace, a building constructed in London’s Hyde Park for the 1851 World Exhibition.

Since 2014, Crystal Palace has thrived in the Premier League, focusing on fiery clashes with bigger London clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur. Although, they have a long-standing rivalry with fellow South London clubs Charlton Athletic and Millwall. But this feud has somewhat waned as the latter teams both play in lower divisions.
